Quantity or Quality?
Definitely we all want quality over quantity, we want the features of an item like the texture, detail, and materials that was used to create it. For example we want a branded item rather than buying ten unbranded item in the same amount of price.
In research, both quantity and quality is important. Quantitative research gives us numerical data, they are very good at conveying a concise summary of a lot of things. But of course there is a downfall in quantitative research, it is not enough to solve problems especially when we are dealing with societal problems.
“Statistics can give you an overview of what is happening, but they can’t tell you why. To really understand the behaviour and decisions of an individual, or a group of actors, we need to get an in-depth knowledge: one data point in a distribution isn’t going to be enough power.“ (Quirkos.com November 2013)
And this is how qualitative research is born in order to supplement a complicated question that math can’t solve. Qualitative research is designed to tackle a more deeper interviews, observations or even experimentations to have an adequate answer and satisfy the why and how questions of our society.
