Unique Example of Qualitative research in STEM
Système International d’Unités or International System of Units is a international decimal system of weights and measures derived from and an extension of the metric system of units. The SI unit is widely used system of measurement but why it is used?
SI was founded in 1960 by the 11th Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM, Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures). CGPM is an international authority that regulates and improves the International System of Units
Before, people have many varieties of measuring something. For example cubit, Egyptians used cubit to build a pyramid. Defined by the distance from the tip of the index finger to the middle of the elbow. Given that the advancement of science and technology, it resulted in a chaotic manner. Scientist now have to work on a standardized units of measurement for them to satisfy their needs.
There are seven fundamental units. For length, the meter is defined as the distance traveled by light in vacuum 1 / 299,792,458 seconds. For mass, kilograms are equal to the kilograms defined by the international prototype kilograms of platinum - rhodium. For time, a second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of radiation. For electric current, Ampere is an electric current that, if kept in two vacuum lines separated by one meter, will produce a force of 2 x 10^-7 newtons per meter of length. For luminescence intensity, candela is defined as the intensity in a given direction of a radiation source having a transmission frequency of 540×10^ 12 Hz, and the radiation intensity in this direction has a radiation intensity of 1/683 watts per cubic cube. For the amount of substance, it is defined as mole a basic entity that contains the same amount of substance as 0.012 kg of carbon-12 atoms. For thermodynamic temperatures, Kelvin.
As i said, science and technology are constantly improving thus giving us a new proposed redefinition of the SI units.
“There will still be the same seven basic units (seconds, meters, kilograms, amps, Kelvin, moles, and candelas). The following will be redefined, kilograms, Ampere, Kelvin, and Mole by choosing the exact values of Planck's constant, elementary electric charge, Boltzmann's constant, and Avogadro's constant, respectively. Second, meters and candelas have been defined by physical constants, and only their existing definitions need to be edited.”
The new definition will improve SI without changing the size of any unit, ensuring continuity with existing measurements.
One unique example of thorough quanlitative research. These would not be possible if they will just jump into conclusions and of course before it was published to the public these are carefully examined. They researched on the ways of having a system unit that can be used internationally and it enables us to develop as a society, to improve our ways of living.
